One thing I’ve learned over the years is that decisions in our industry are rarely as straightforward as they seem.
On paper, it looks simple: a requirement is defined, suppliers propose solutions, and a decision is made. In reality, things are often more nuanced.
The OEM may be focused on performance and long-term reliability.
The EMS may be looking at manufacturability, lead times and supply chain stability.
Suppliers bring new technologies, alternative solutions and different levels of support.
Everyone is looking at the same project, but from a different perspective. And that’s what makes things interesting.
Most successful projects I’ve seen were not necessarily the ones with the “best” technical solution.
They were the ones where all stakeholders managed to align around a solution that worked for everyone : Performance, cost, availability and risk matters.
Finding the right balance between all these factors is often where the real challenge lies.
Perhaps that’s why technical discussions and commercial discussions can never really be separated.
Who do you think has the biggest influence on key decisions across the electronics supply chain?
